I've reviewed over 1,000 short-form clips. The #1 reason they flop has nothing to do with editing skill.

It's the first 3 seconds.

The problem

Most clippers start their videos with context. They set up the scene, introduce the topic, or show a title card. By the time the interesting part starts, the viewer has already swiped.

The algorithm doesn't care how good your clip is at second 15. If people leave at second 2, it's dead.

The 3-Second Rule

Your clip needs to do ONE of these things before the 3-second mark:

1. Pattern interrupt

Something visually unexpected. A sudden zoom, a frame that doesn't match what they were scrolling through, movement where they expected stillness. The viewer's thumb stops because their brain says "wait, what?"

2. Open a loop

Say or show something that creates a question in the viewer's mind. "Here's why every clipper is doing this wrong" — now they HAVE to stay to find out what "this" is.

3. Peak-first editing

Start with the most intense, emotional, or surprising moment of the entire clip. Then cut to "24 hours earlier" or let the story build back to that moment. Movie trailers have done this forever.

Practical test

Go look at your last 5 clips. Watch only the first 3 seconds of each. Ask yourself honestly: Would I stop scrolling for this?

If the answer is no, that's your entire problem. Not transitions. Not color grading. Not captions. The hook.

The fix is simple

Before you edit anything, decide: What is my 3-second hook?

Write it down. Edit the hook FIRST. Make it undeniable. Then build the rest of the clip around it.

The best clippers in the game aren't the best editors — they're the best hook writers.
