5 Mistakes Ship Owners Make During Vessel Registration (And How to Avoid Them)

After handling hundreds of vessel registrations across multiple flag states, these are the mistakes I see over and over again:

1. Choosing the wrong flag state

Not all flags are created equal. Some have lower fees but terrible port state inspection records. Others look cheap upfront but hit you with hidden annual compliance costs. The right flag depends on your trade routes, vessel type, and crew nationality.

2. Incomplete documentation

Missing a single document can delay your registration by weeks. The bare minimum: Certificate of Survey, Bill of Sale, Deletion Certificate from the previous registry, and proof of ownership. Most owners forget the deletion cert.

3. Ignoring ongoing compliance

Registration isn't a one-time thing. Annual surveys, safety equipment certifications, crew documentation — miss any of these and you risk detention at port.

4. Not incorporating properly

If you're operating commercially, you need a proper maritime company structure. Running vessels under a personal name exposes you to unlimited liability.

5. Doing it all yourself

Maritime paperwork is a full-time job. Every hour you spend chasing documents is an hour your vessel isn't earning revenue.

That's exactly why we built Coast AQUATIC Marine Services — we handle vessel registration, company incorporation, and ongoing compliance so you can focus on operations.
