The 3 ops fires every early-stage founder ignores (until it's too late)

After 19 years working in operations, HR, and client relations, I've watched the same three things burn startups down — and they're never the ones founders expect.

1. Your first 5 hires set the culture permanently.

Not your values doc. Not your mission statement. The actual humans you bring in during months 1-6 will define how your company operates for years. Most founders hire for skill and ignore fit. By the time they notice, the culture is already baked.

2. Nobody owns "the middle."

You've got a CEO with vision and ICs doing the work. But who's connecting those two? Who's making sure priorities actually translate into execution? That gap is where startups silently bleed money and time.

3. Client handoffs are where trust dies.

You close a deal, celebrate, then throw the client over to someone who wasn't in the room. The client feels it immediately. Retention problems aren't product problems — they're transition problems.

I've spent nearly two decades fixing these exact things. If any of this hit close to home, that's probably a sign.
