The #1 reason adult rec hockey players plateau (and how to fix it)

Most adult rec players who've been skating for years still feel stuck at the same level. They play regularly, they're not quitting, but they're not actually getting better.

Here's why: they're practicing habits, not skills.

Every time you lace up and play a game without focused skill work, you're just reinforcing whatever you already do β€” including the bad habits. Games test what you have. They don't build what you lack.

The players who actually improve do a few things differently:

1. They skate with intention outside of games.

Even 20 minutes of focused edge work before a stick-and-puck beats an hour of unstructured play. Knowing what you're working on changes everything.

2. They watch their own shifts.

Most rec players have no idea what they look like on the ice. Record yourself once and you'll identify 3 things to fix immediately β€” crossovers, stick position, gap on defense. One of these is worse than you think.

3. They understand the "why" behind fundamentals.

The mechanics of a proper skating stride are counterintuitive. Until someone explains it clearly and you drill it deliberately, most players never fix it. They just skate faster doing it wrong.

This is why I built Cold Edge Hockey β€” structured coaching for adult rec players who are serious about not plateauing.
