5 spice swaps that will change how you cook forever

Most home cooks use the same 5-6 spices on repeat. Here's how to break that cycle:

1. Swap paprika → Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)

Smoky, slightly sweet, way more depth. Use it in stews, marinades, even scrambled eggs.

2. Swap dried oregano → Za'atar

Thyme + sumac + sesame. Sprinkle on roasted vegetables, flatbread, or hummus. You'll never go back.

3. Swap garlic powder → Black garlic paste

Fermented, umami-rich, almost like a savory caramel. Mix into sauces, mash, or spread on toast.

4. Swap cinnamon → Cardamom

In baking, coffee, or rice dishes — cardamom adds a floral complexity that cinnamon can't match.

5. Swap soy sauce → Fish sauce (hear me out)

A few drops in pasta sauce, soup, or even salad dressing. It doesn't taste "fishy" — it adds invisible depth.

These aren't exotic for the sake of it. They're practical upgrades that make everyday cooking taste restaurant-level.

I put together a full ebook collection covering techniques from cuisines around the world — Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Italian, and more. If you're the kind of cook who wants to actually understand why flavors work, not just follow recipes, check it out.
