The 3 AM wake-up isn't insomnia — it's cortisol

If you wake up between 3-4 AM with racing thoughts and can't fall back asleep, that's not random. That's a cortisol spike.

Here's what's happening:

Your cortisol is supposed to be at its lowest around 3 AM. But if your HPA axis is dysregulated from chronic stress, your adrenals fire too early. You get a surge of cortisol hours before your alarm, and your brain interprets it as "time to be alert."

This is actually one of the earliest and most reliable signs your cortisol rhythm is broken.

Three things that can help immediately:

→ Magnesium glycinate before bed (300-400mg) — relaxes the nervous system and supports the cortisol decline curve

→ No screens 1 hour before sleep — blue light suppresses melatonin and keeps cortisol elevated

→ 4-7-8 breathing when you wake up — inhale 4 sec, hold 7, exhale 8. Four cycles. This activates your vagus nerve and physically downshifts your stress response.

I built an entire course around this. It's a 7-day protocol to reset your cortisol curve — covering morning routines, nutrition, supplements, and sleep optimization.

If you're tired of being tired, check it out.
