If you've ever visited a fish market in Vigo, A Coruña, or any town along the Rías Baixas, you've heard a language that isn't Spanish.

Galician has words for the sea that Castilian simply doesn't. Here are 5 of my favorites:

1. Percebeiro/a — The person who harvests goose barnacles (percebes) from wave-battered cliffs. One of the most dangerous jobs in Europe, and there's no single-word equivalent in Spanish or English.

2. Batea — The floating wooden raft platforms in the Galician estuaries where mussels grow on dangling ropes. Galicia produces more mussels than anywhere else in Europe because of these.

3. Mariscadora — A woman who harvests shellfish by hand at low tide, digging clams from the sand. An entire profession with its own word, its own guild (confraría), and centuries of tradition.

4. Polbeira — The woman who cooks octopus at fairs and festivals. She has her own copper pot, her own technique, and her own title.

5. Morriña — Not a seafood word, but you'll feel it after you leave Galicia. It means a deep, aching homesickness for Galicia — specifically. It's what brings people back.
