5 things high school players do that kill their recruiting chances (and how to fix them)

After working with hundreds of high school players, the same mistakes show up over and over. Here's what's hurting your chances — and what to do instead:

1. Waiting until junior year to start your highlight tape

Coaches are watching film of sophomores now. You don't need a polished reel — you need footage. Record every rep, every scrimmage, every pickup game. Start now.

2. Sending the same generic email to 200 coaches

Coaches delete these instantly. Research their system. Reference something specific. Three personalized emails outperform 100 blasts.

3. Training only what you're already good at

It feels productive. It's not. Your weak hand, off-ball movement, defensive IQ — that's what coaches scrutinize. Put 70% of reps into your weaknesses.

4. Underestimating the academic side

A D1 offer means nothing if you can't qualify. Your GPA and test scores open or close doors before a coach even watches your tape.

5. Going to the wrong camps

Not all exposure events are equal. Prospect camps where coaches can actually offer are where decisions get made. Be strategic — not just present.

Fix these five things and you're already ahead of most players you're competing against. Drop your questions below.
