Why your dining table is the most important piece of furniture you'll ever buy
People spend weeks choosing a sofa. They agonise over kitchen worktops. But the dining table? Most people grab whatever's on sale.
That's a mistake.
Your dining table is where every meal happens. Every birthday cake gets cut. Every late-night conversation unfolds. It's the one piece of furniture the whole family touches every single day.
Here's what we've learned after years of building tables by hand:
Solid wood outlasts everything. Veneered MDF might look the part for a year, but it chips, warps, and ends up in a skip. A proper solid oak or walnut table gets better with age — the grain deepens, the surface develops character.
Size matters more than you think. Most people buy too small. You want at least 90cm depth so people across from each other aren't playing footsie. And leave 75cm per person along the length.
The finish is everything. A good oil finish lets you sand out scratches yourself. Lacquer looks perfect on day one but shows every mark by month six.
If you're renovating or moving into a new place, start with the table. Build the room around it. Everything else is secondary.
We build each table to order — solid hardwood, handcrafted, built to last your family a lifetime.
