The 3 support tickets killing your churn (and how to fix them in a weekend)
If you run a paid community, course, or membership, 80% of your churn is hiding in 3 ticket types:
1. "How do I cancel?" tickets that are actually price complaints
Most cancellation requests aren't really about wanting to leave — they're a signal the member doesn't feel they're getting $X/month of value anymore. Before you let anyone cancel, your flow should surface a pause option or a temporary discount automatically. Most creators lose these members simply because no one responded fast enough — by the time you reply, they've already moved on emotionally.
2. Refund requests that get either auto-approved (hurting margin) or ignored (hurting trust)
The fix isn't "be stricter" or "be nicer" — it's consistency. Write your refund policy down as explicit rules (e.g. full refund within 7 days, no refund after 30 days + 1 free month instead). Apply it the same way every time. Inconsistent enforcement is what turns a single refund into a public trust problem.
3. Silent churn — members who never open a ticket, just stop logging in
This is the most expensive one because nobody notices until the renewal fails. Track login/engagement frequency per member and trigger a check-in message the moment someone goes quiet for 10+ days. Waiting for the cancellation flow is too late.
The common thread: all three are solvable with rules + speed, not more headcount. You don't need a bigger support team — you need faster, more consistent responses on the tickets that actually move retention.
