5 Crochet Mistakes Every Beginner Makes (And How to Fix Them)

Been crocheting for years and teaching beginners along the way. Here are the most common mistakes I see — and the simple fixes that'll save you hours of frustration.

1. Tension too tight

Your first rows will look like a brick wall. Relax your grip. Seriously. The yarn should slide through your fingers, not get strangled. If your hook can't glide through easily, loosen up.

2. Losing count of stitches

You start with 20 stitches and somehow end up with 17 by row 5. Use a stitch marker on your first and last stitch of every row. Game changer.

3. Skipping the turning chain

That little chain at the start of each row isn't decoration — it's structure. Miss it and your edges will look wavy and uneven.

4. Wrong hook size for the yarn

Check the label on your yarn. It tells you exactly which hook to use. Using a 3.5mm hook with chunky yarn is a recipe for frustration.

5. Trying complex patterns too early

Start with a dishcloth or a simple scarf. Master single crochet, double crochet, and chains before tackling amigurumi. You'll get there faster by building solid fundamentals.

We built Crochet APP to help you skip the confusion and jump straight to creating. Patterns, tutorials, and a community of crafters who actually help each other. 🪝
