The granny square is having a moment — here's why

If you've been on Pinterest, TikTok, or any craft fair in the last year, you've noticed: granny squares are everywhere again. Cardigans, bags, blankets, bucket hats — the classic stitch pattern is back and better than ever.

But here's what most people don't realize: the granny square isn't just trendy. It's one of the most versatile building blocks in crochet. Learn one square, and you can make basically anything.

3 reasons the granny square is the best stitch to master:

  1. It's beginner-proof. Chain stitches + double crochets. That's it. If you can do those two things, you can make a granny square.

  2. It's infinitely customizable. Change colors, swap stitch patterns, adjust size — same basic technique, endless results.

  3. It scales to real projects fast. Most patterns that look impressive (patchwork cardigans, throw blankets, tote bags) are just granny squares joined together.

I've been designing crochet patterns for a while now, and I built Crochet Granny as a place to share everything I know — patterns for all levels, project breakdowns, and a community where you can share your work and get help when you're stuck.
