The 3 mistakes that make beginner canoeists look like they've never been on water

I've watched a lot of people get in a canoe for the first time. The same three things trip everyone up — not because they're bad paddlers, but because nobody told them the fundamentals.

1. They sit on the seat instead of kneeling

Sitting raises your center of gravity and makes every wobble feel scarier than it is. Get low. Kneel on the floor with your backside resting lightly on the seat edge. It changes everything about how the boat feels.

2. They use their arms instead of their torso

The J-stroke isn't an arm movement — it's a core rotation. If your shoulders aren't moving, you're burning out your forearms for no reason. Every efficient stroke starts with your hips rotating first.

3. They fight the current

The instinct on moving water is to brace hard and resist. The correct move is almost always the opposite: lean downstream, keep your paddle in the water, and let the current do some work. Fighting water is a losing game.

These three things account for 80% of what makes someone look uncomfortable on the water. Fix them, and everything else comes faster.
