Spent the last while watching a lot of editors — beginners and freelancers trying to get clients — and the biggest gap isn't technical. It's pacing judgment.

Everyone obsesses over transitions, LUTs, whatever preset pack is trending. Meanwhile the edits that actually perform have one thing in common: they cut on the emotional beat, not the literal one. You're not cutting when the sentence ends. You're cutting when the audience's attention starts to dip — usually half a beat earlier than feels natural.

Quick way to test this on your own work: mute the video and watch just the cuts. If you can still feel the rhythm without any audio, your pacing is solid. If it feels flat, you're probably cutting on dialogue instead of energy.

This is also the #1 thing that separates editors who land repeat clients from ones who don't — clients can't always articulate 'good pacing' but they feel it immediately in retention.
