The 3 edits that land you your first freelance client

Most aspiring editors spend months learning effects they'll never use. Here's what actually gets you paid:

1. The 90-second testimonial edit

Every business needs customer testimonials. Take raw talking-head footage, clean it up, add captions and light motion graphics. This is the easiest sell because every business owner has footage sitting on their phone and no idea what to do with it. Charge $150-300 per video.

2. The social media reel package

Take a 10-minute podcast or interview clip and cut it into 3-5 short-form vertical videos. Add jump cuts, zoom-ins, and animated captions. Offer this as a recurring weekly package and you've got monthly retainer income.

3. The before/after showcase

Take the worst footage you can find (with permission), transform it into something clean, and post the before/after side by side. This IS your portfolio. Clients don't care about your reel — they want to see what you can do with bad footage.

Stop learning, start editing. The skills that pay aren't the flashy ones — they're the ones that solve problems for people with money.
