The 5-Product Skincare Routine That Actually Works (Under $40)

Most skincare routines are overcomplicated. You don't need 12 steps. You need 5 products that do their job.

Here's the exact routine I recommend for anyone just starting out or resetting their skin:

AM Routine

1. Gentle Cleanser โ€” CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser (~$10)

Skip the harsh foaming stuff. This won't strip your skin barrier.

2. Vitamin C Serum โ€” Any L-ascorbic acid serum 10-20% (~$12-15)

Brightens, protects from free radicals, fades dark spots over time. Apply to damp skin.

3. Moisturizer + SPF โ€” Use a dedicated SPF 30+ sunscreen (~$8-12)

This is non-negotiable. UV damage causes 90% of visible aging. Every. Single. Day.

PM Routine

4. Same Cleanser โ€” Double cleanse if you wore makeup (oil cleanser first, then CeraVe)

5. Retinol โ€” Start with 0.25% retinol, 2-3x per week (~$8-10)

This is the single most effective anti-aging and skin-clearing ingredient that exists. Start slow or you'll wreck your face.

The Rules

  • Patch test everything. Inside of your wrist, 24 hours.

  • Introduce one product at a time. One new product per 2 weeks minimum.

  • Consistency > products. A basic routine done daily beats a $300 routine done randomly.

  • Your skin will purge. If you start retinol and break out for 2-4 weeks, that's normal. Push through.

Total cost: ~$38-47 for products that last 2-3 months.

That's it. No $80 serums. No 10-step routines. Just the basics that dermatologists have been recommending for decades.
