The 3 things every beginner dancer gets wrong (and how to fix them)
After 20 years of teaching dance, I can tell you that almost every beginner makes the same three mistakes. They're not about talent — they're about approach.
1. Looking at your feet. Your body follows your eyes. The moment you look down, your posture collapses, your frame breaks, and every movement loses its line. Fix: Pick a point at eye level and keep your chin parallel to the floor. You'll feel unstable for a week. Then something clicks.
2. Trying to learn speed before learning control. Beginners want to look like the advanced dancers immediately. But speed without control is just chaos. The most graceful movers in any room are the ones who mastered slow first. Fix: Practice every new step at half tempo until it feels effortless. Then — and only then — add speed.
3. Ignoring the music. Most beginners count steps. Great dancers feel the phrase. There's a difference between hitting a beat and riding a melody. Fix: Before you practice any choreography, just listen. Close your eyes. Let the music move through you before you try to move with it.
These three shifts will transform your dancing faster than any YouTube tutorial ever could.
I teach all of this — and much more — in my weekly program, Dancing Gracefully. Built specifically for beginners who want to learn the right way from day one.
