The 3 Mistakes Every Beginner Dancer Makes (And How to Fix Them)

I've taught dance for 20 years. Ballroom, waltz, foxtrot — you name it.

And in that time, I've seen every beginner make the same three mistakes. Here's what they are and how to fix them immediately:

1. Looking at your feet.

Your body follows your eyes. The second you look down, your posture collapses, your frame breaks, and your partner feels it. Fix: Pick a point across the room at eye level. Lock onto it. Your feet know where the floor is.

2. Gripping your partner's hand too tight.

Tension in your hands travels up your arms and into your shoulders. Now you're stiff, your lead is unclear, and the dance feels like a wrestling match. Fix: Hold your partner's hand like you're holding a bird — firm enough it won't fly away, gentle enough you won't hurt it.

3. Trying to memorize steps instead of feeling the music.

Steps are a language. Music is the conversation. If you memorize phrases without understanding the context, you'll always sound robotic. Fix: Before you dance, just listen. Close your eyes. Feel where the beats land. The steps will follow naturally.

Master these three things and you'll already look better than 90% of the people on any dance floor.

If you're serious about learning elegant dance the right way, Dancing Gracefully is my weekly program built specifically for beginners in social settings. 20 years of teaching, distilled into a step-by-step system.
