The 3 things no one tells you before becoming an interior decorator

I've trained hundreds of interior decorators online, and there are three things almost every beginner gets wrong:

1. Style is the last thing you should focus on.

Everyone wants to talk about aesthetics. But professional decorators spend most of their time on space planning, traffic flow, and scale. If the fundamentals are off, no amount of beautiful furniture fixes it. Learn the grid before you learn the gallery wall.

2. Clients don't hire decorators. They hire confidence.

Your portfolio matters less than your ability to walk into a room, listen to a client, and translate their vague "I want it to feel cozy but modern" into an actual brief. That's a skill. It's trainable. Most people skip it.

3. You don't need a degree — you need projects.

The interior design world still has gatekeepers. But clients don't care about your credentials; they care about the before/after photos. The fastest path to clients is volunteer work, spec projects, and showing your process publicly.

If you're thinking about making this a career, the bar to entry is lower than you think — but the execution needs to be sharp.

At Déco Pro School, we cover all of this: the technical foundations, client communication, and how to build a real business around your taste.
