The 3 things I wish I knew before going full-time as a detailer
I spent 2 years as a side hustle detailer before making the jump full-time. Here's what would've saved me months of trial and error:
1. Stop competing on price. When I started, I was charging $75 for a full detail because I thought that's what the market could bear. Wrong. I was attracting the worst clients — the ones who complain about everything and never come back. The second I raised my prices to $200+ and positioned myself as premium, I started getting better clients who respected my time and referred their friends.
2. Your phone is your best marketing tool. I wasted money on flyers, business cards, and even a billboard once. The thing that actually filled my calendar? Before-and-after content on social media. Every single job, I'd film a 30-second transformation. That content did more for my business than anything else combined.
3. Product knowledge is a competitive advantage. Most detailers grab whatever's on the shelf at the auto parts store. When you actually understand coatings, compounds, and paint correction at a technical level, you can charge 2-3x more because you can explain why your work is better. Clients pay for expertise, not just labor.
If you're doing detailing on the side and want to make this your full-time income — I built Detail Academy to be the exact playbook I wish I had. Everything from getting your first 20 clients to building a real operation.
