The government sets MSP (Minimum Support Price) for crops every year. In theory, it's a safety net. In practice, most farmers sell to middlemen at 20-40% below MSP because they can't access mandis, don't have transport, or simply can't wait.
The result? A farmer growing rice gets ₹2,100/quintal when the MSP is ₹2,300. The same rice reaches a restaurant at ₹4,000+ after 3-4 middlemen take their cut.
