5 Foods Most Dialysis Patients Don't Realize They Should Avoid
Getting diagnosed with kidney disease changes your relationship with food overnight. Your doctor hands you a sheet of "don'ts" but rarely explains why — or what to eat instead.
Here are 5 foods that trip up most new dialysis patients:
1. Bananas — Everyone thinks they're the ultimate health food. But one banana has ~420mg of potassium. On dialysis, that's a big number. Swap for apples or berries.
2. Whole wheat bread — Higher in phosphorus and potassium than white bread. This surprises people because whole wheat is "healthier" in general. Not for kidney patients.
3. Canned soups — The sodium is staggering. One can often has 800-1200mg. Your daily limit might be 2000mg total. Make soups from scratch with low-sodium broth instead.
4. Oranges & orange juice — Another potassium bomb. Try grape juice or apple juice as alternatives.
5. Processed cheese — Loaded with phosphorus additives. Fresh cheese in small portions is a better bet.
The key is learning to read labels for sodium, potassium, and phosphorus — not just calories. It takes practice, but it gets easier.
