Most people type one sentence into a chat tool and then decide “AI is overhyped.” The model did not fail. The request did.

A usable prompt is not poetry. It is a brief. Four lines is enough:

1. Role. Who should it act as — a tutor, an editor, a career coach, a study partner. Keep it ordinary. “Act as a billionaire” does nothing useful.

2. Task. One verb. Summarize this chapter. Rewrite this bullet. Quiz me on these notes. If you cannot say the task in one sentence, split it into two prompts.

3. Constraints. Length, format, what to avoid. “No invented statistics.” “Use only the notes I paste.” “Give me 8 bullets, not a essay.” Constraints are how you stop fluff.

4. Input. Paste the actual material: the paragraph, the job description, the lecture notes. Without input, the model fills gaps with guesses. Guesses look confident. They are still guesses.

A worked example

Weak: “Help me study biology.”

Better:

You are a patient tutor for a first-year student. Quiz me on the notes below. Ask one question at a time. After I answer, tell me if I am right and why, then ask the next question. Do not introduce topics that are not in the notes. Keep explanations under 80 words. Notes: [paste]

That is it. Role, task, constraints, input.

Three beginner mistakes

• Asking for “a complete plan” with no deadline, hours available, or current skill. You get a generic blog post.

• Letting it invent numbers for a resume or an assignment. If you did not measure it, do not put it on the page.

• Pasting private data. Student IDs, employer files, unpublished research — leave those out.
