The 3 mistakes killing 90% of DIY lawns (and what to do instead)
I have had the best turf in my neighborhood for a decade now. I have had lush tall fescue, and golf course looking bermuda, and I see the same three mistakes everywhere — from neighbors, from Reddit, from "helpful" guys at the hardware store.
Mistake #1: Mowing too short. You think scalping the grass means you mow less often. What actually happens: you stress the turf, invite weeds, and cook the roots in summer heat. Never cut more than 1/3 of the blade height. Your lawn will thank you.
Mistake #2: Watering every day for 10 minutes. Shallow watering = shallow roots = a lawn that dies the second it gets hot. Water deep and infrequent — 1 inch per week, 1/2 an inch at a time. Push those roots down. And DO NOT water at night, unless you want to invite disease. 4-7am is the perfect time so the blades don't stay wet over night.
Mistake #3: Not fertilizing properly. It is always best to test your soil so you are not guessing. But the biggest mistake in this area I see, is folks are afraid to "throw it down". Yes, looking at a bag of fertilizer can be complicated, but that is why we are here!
Fix these three things and you'll have a better lawn than 90% of your neighborhood — without paying a lawn service a dime.
No one and I mean no one will care for your turf like you can. And with our program you will streamline the process and be able to enjoy your lawn while your neighbors stare in envy from across the road:).
