After 20+ years DJing everywhere from rooftop sessions to packed casino residencies in SoCal, here's the one thing that separates a good set from an unforgettable one:
You're not performing for a crowd — you're having a conversation with it.
When I blend house, Latin, and electronic, I'm not picking tracks because they're trendy. I'm watching the floor. Are people talking? Dancing? Looking at their phones? Every reaction is data.
Here's my 3-step framework:
Open low, build trust. Start with familiar grooves that get heads nodding. Don't chase the drop in the first 15 minutes.
Read the energy shift. There's always a moment around 45 minutes in where the room is ready to go somewhere unexpected. That's when you take them on a journey.
Close with intention. The last 3 songs are what people remember. Leave them wanting one more.
