You are one of 50 founding members, which means two things. You are here before the programme starts on Thursday 1 October, and you have a say in what it becomes.


THREE THINGS TO DO NOW, IN ABOUT TEN MINUTES

  1. Read Start Here. It says exactly what you get today and what starts on 1 October, so nothing about the next five weeks is a surprise.

  2. Introduce yourself in The Circle, four lines, the format is pinned there, and reply to one other person's.

  3. Fill in the Member Pulse: [LINK]. Thirty seconds. Nothing is locked behind it.


Then post your first question in Ask Emmanuel. You can ask me anything in writing and I will answer within 72 hours. Not a bot, not a community manager. Me.



WHAT THIS ROOM IS NOT

  1. Not a place to sell. No pitching services, tools, or coaching to members, here or by DM.

  2. Not a citation ring. No asking the group to cite, review, peer-review, or boost each other's papers. It is the fastest way to make a research community worthless.

  3. Not somewhere your work travels from. What gets posted here stays here. Nobody's draft, data or half-finished argument leaves this room.

  4. Not a place to name names. Talk about your supervisor situation as freely as you need to, that is half of why this exists, but do not name your supervisor, your examiner or your institution in a public post.

  5. Not somewhere to lurk. If you have not posted in a month, I will ask you why. That is the deal you bought.



WHAT IS ACTIVELY ENCOURAGED

  1. Posting once a week, even when the week went badly

  2. Bringing the actual problem, half-finished, badly argued, three weeks late. That is what this room is for

  3. Turning up to the Writing Room and doing the check-out honestly

  4. Asking in Ask Me Anything rather than sitting on it for a fortnight

  5. Replying to someone else's post. This is the one that turns a group chat into a room where people know each other by October

  6. Saying out loud when you have gone quiet, and why

  7. Sending me your wins. Ethics approval counts. A clean chapter counts.


I have examined more than 45 theses. What I have seen that separates the doctoral candidates who finish from the ones who do not is whether they had somewhere to take the work. That is what this is.
