I put together a guide for first-time dog owners after watching the same pattern play out over and over: people fall in love with a breed, bring the puppy home, and only THEN start figuring out logistics. Here's what trips people up most:

1. Buying the wrong crate size. Everyone buys a crate sized for the adult dog, thinking bigger is better. Puppies need a crate that fits their CURRENT size — too much space and house training takes twice as long because they'll just potty in the corner.

2. Skipping the vet consult before pickup. Most people book the first vet visit AFTER bringing the puppy home. If you call ahead, most vets will walk you through vaccination schedules, food transition plans, and red flags to watch for in the first 48 hours — for free.

3. Underestimating the adjustment period. The first 3 nights are rough for everyone, dog included. Owners who know this going in (and plan for broken sleep, accidents, and a clingy puppy) handle it fine. Owners who expect a calm, trained dog on day one burn out fast and it hurts the bond.
