I've been buying from 1688 for years now, so l wanted to put together a real world guide for anyone just starting out. A lot of the tips online are outdated, so this is based on what actually works in 2026

Use image search instead of typing

If you can't read or write Chinese, forget searching with words. Just upload or drag a picture of the item you want straight into the search box. It works surprisingly well and often pulls up listings from actual manufacturers that you'd never find otherwise. This is really helpful if you've seen the same product on Taobao or AliExpress marked up way higher.

Not all sellers are factories

This is one of the most common misunderstandings. Plenty of people on 1688 are just middlemen who buy from real factories and resell for more. Look for official verified badges and check how long the store has been running.

Real factories usually have a wider range of similar items, list higher order minimums, and their photos tend to be simple and focused c v the product rather than fancy styling.

Paying and shipping without an agent

Nowadays you can actually pay directly through the 1688 app using international Alipay, which makes things way simpler than it used to be. That said, sellers almost never ship directly to other countries. You’ll still need a local address or forwarding service inside China to receive your items first, then send them to you internationally, that’s still the standard method for most buyers outside China.
