The #1 mistake beginner drummers make (and how to fix it in 10 minutes)

Most beginners grip their sticks way too tight.

It feels natural — you're nervous, you want control. But a death grip kills your sound, tires your hands out in 5 minutes, and makes fast playing nearly impossible.

Here's the fix: hold the stick like you're shaking someone's hand. Firm enough that it won't fly out, loose enough that you can bounce it off the snare and let it rebound naturally.

Try this drill:

  1. Hold one stick loosely at the balance point (about 1/3 from the butt end)

  2. Drop it on the snare and let it bounce — don't force it back up

  3. Repeat until the rebound feels automatic

  4. Then add your other hand

This is the foundation of the Moeller technique. It's the difference between players who plateau at 80bpm and those who blow past it.

10 minutes a day on this and you'll feel a difference within a week.
