I'm a freelance web dev out of Ludhiana/Jaito. For two years my model was simple: WhatsApp a local shop owner in Hinglish, build them a site on their own Hostinger domain, get paid once, move to the next client.

The problem: every single one of those shops still ran their actual day-to-day business — orders, payment follow-ups, catalog updates — over raw WhatsApp chat. The website I built them was basically a business card. It never touched the actual chaos.

So I built DukaanBot instead — a Telegram bot that takes orders, sends payment reminders, and syncs a catalog to a Google Sheet the shop owner already knows how to edit. No app download for their customers. No English-only SaaS dashboard they'll never open.

Two things I learned building for this market specifically:

• Local shop owners don't want "a platform." They want the exact same WhatsApp-order habit they already have, just without losing track of who owes what.

• Onboarding has to happen on a call, in Hinglish. Self-serve signup dies here — every single customer I've onboarded needed 15 minutes of hand-holding, and that 15 minutes is what makes them trust a subscription instead of a one-time payment.

If you're a dev sitting on one-off client work in a smaller market, the shift that matters isn't the tech — it's turning a service you keep re-selling manually into something that bills itself every month.
