5 Excel shortcuts that save me 2+ hours every week
Most people use about 10% of what Excel can do. Here are the shortcuts I use daily that most people have never heard of:
1. Ctrl + E (Flash Fill) — Excel reads a pattern from your first entry and fills the rest. Need to extract first names from "John Smith, Jane Doe"? Type "John" in the next column, hit Ctrl+E. Done.
2. Alt + = (Auto Sum) — Highlights a range and instantly sums it. No more typing =SUM() manually.
3. Ctrl + Shift + L (Toggle Filters) — Instantly add/remove dropdown filters to your headers. Game changer for sorting big datasets.
4. Ctrl + ` (Show Formulas) — Toggles between showing formula results and the actual formulas. Perfect for debugging or auditing someone else's spreadsheet.
5. F4 (Repeat Last Action) — Just formatted a cell yellow? Select another cell, press F4 — same formatting applied. Works for most actions.
These aren't fancy — they're the ones that actually save real time.
