Been building high-power ebikes for years, and the single most common failure I see in first-timers isn't the motor or the battery — it's the fuse (or lack of one).
People spend $400 on a controller, $300 on a battery pack, and then run bare wire straight from the pack with no fusing because "it's just a short run." Then a connector rubs through insulation on a bump, shorts against the frame, and the pack either fries or (worse) vents.
A $50 ANL fuse holder rated slightly above your controller's max draw is cheap insurance against a pack fire. Rule of thumb: fuse rating should sit between your controller's max continuous current and your battery's max discharge rating — close to the controller side.
Other cheap wins that get skipped:
XT90 or XT150 connectors instead of bullet connectors for anything over 40A continuous
Heat shrink AND a physical strain relief at every pack terminal
A voltmeter mounted somewhere visible — sag under load tells you more about your pack's health than resting voltage ever will
