5 things most travelers get wrong about Turkey (and how to avoid them)

I've been running luxury travel experiences in Turkey for years, and the same mistakes come up over and over again.

1. Booking Cappadocia balloons last minute

The best operators sell out 4–6 weeks in advance in peak season. Book before you book your flights.

2. Spending all your Istanbul time in Sultanahmet

Hagia Sophia is unmissable — but Balat, Karaköy, Çukurcuma, and Bebek are where you'll actually fall in love with the city. Most tours never go there.

3. Underestimating the Aegean Coast

Alaçatı and the ruins around Ephesus on a private yacht are some of the best experiences in the entire Mediterranean. Slept on.

4. Going in August

Peak crowds, 40°C heat, prices maxed out. Late May, early June, or September are the sweet spots — warm, uncrowded, perfect.

5. Eating at hotel recommendations

Turkey has one of the best culinary traditions in the world. If your hotel recommends a restaurant, it's probably a kickback. Ask locals. Eat at the places with plastic chairs and no English menu.

We put together full destination guides and insider itineraries at EcoTripon — happy to answer questions below.

5 Istanbul Mistakes That Ruin Most Tourists' Trips

I've been running tours in Istanbul for years. Here are the 5 mistakes I see over and over — and what to do instead.

1. Only visiting Sultanahmet

The tourist district is incredible, but it's like visiting only Times Square in NYC. Cross the Galata Bridge. Explore Kadıköy. Walk through Balat. That's where the real Istanbul lives.

2. Taking the Bosphorus "public ferry" thinking it's the scenic cruise

The commuter ferry is cheap and goes from A to B. A proper Bosphorus cruise gives you 2-3 hours with both European and Asian shoreline views, narration, and sunset timing. Completely different experience.

3. Eating at restaurants with picture menus near the Blue Mosque

If the menu has photos and someone standing outside trying to pull you in — keep walking. The best food in Istanbul is in the side streets of Karaköy, Beşiktaş, and Kadıköy market.

4. Skipping Cappadocia because "it's far from Istanbul"

It's a 1-hour flight. You can do a 2-day trip with a balloon ride, underground cities, and fairy chimneys, and be back in Istanbul for dinner. Worth every minute.

5. Not haggling at the Grand Bazaar

The first price you're quoted is usually 2-3x what you should pay. Start at 40% of asking price and work up. It's expected and part of the fun.
