I've fixed enough e-bikes around this city to know the pattern by now: someone grabs a "great deal" off Facebook Marketplace, rides it twice, and then it's dead in their garage because nobody will touch a no-name battery pack or the seller ghosted them.

A few things I check before ever handing over cash for a used e-bike, if you're shopping locally:

1. Battery health, not just charge. A battery that holds a charge at rest can still sag hard under load. Ask to ride it up an incline, not just around the driveway.

2. Controller and motor for water damage. Vegas heat means people ride at night near canals/washes more than you'd think. Corrosion on the connectors is a red flag.

3. VIN/serial match. Stolen e-bikes move fast on resale groups here. If the seller can't produce a receipt or the serial's been scratched off, walk.

4. Aftermarket batteries and controllers are a mixed bag. Some are fine, some are fire risk. If you don't recognize the brand, get it checked before you trust it.
