The clarity trap: why "finding your purpose" is the wrong first move
Most people trying to get unstuck start by hunting for their "purpose." They journal, they take personality quizzes, they wait for a lightning-bolt moment of clarity before they act.
Here's the problem: clarity doesn't come before action. It comes from it.
In a few years of coaching people through exactly this stuck-feeling, the pattern is always the same. The people who break through aren't the ones who figure it all out first — they're the ones who pick a direction that's roughly right, take an imperfect action this week, and let the feedback from that action tell them what to adjust.
A framework that actually works:
Name the vague feeling specifically. "I feel stuck" isn't information. "I feel disconnected from my work because I haven't built anything of my own in 3 years" is.
Pick one small, reversible action that tests a direction — not a life-changing leap. A conversation, a small project, a single no you've been avoiding.
Review weekly, not yearly. Purpose isn't a single discovery, it's a direction you keep correcting toward.
Confidence isn't a prerequisite for moving — it's a byproduct of having moved. Stop waiting to feel ready. Pick the smallest true step and take it this week.
