Most "transfer bonus alerts" are noise. Here's how to actually filter them.

The math that matters: a transfer bonus is only worth acting on if it drops your effective cost-per-point below what you'd pay for the redemption in cash, AND you have a confirmed use for the miles within ~9 months (transferred points usually can't be un-transferred).

Rule of thumb cost-per-point targets:

• Domestic economy: aim for ≤1.2¢/point in value

• International business class: aim for ≥1.8¢/point in value

• International first class: aim for ≥2.5¢/point in value (these are the real unlocks)

What to actually check before transferring:

1. Award space exists on your target route/date RIGHT NOW (search before you transfer, never after)

2. The bonus percentage clears your break-even math above

3. You're not transferring "just in case" — dead points sitting in an airline account are worse than points sitting in a flexible bank account

Most people lose value by transferring too early out of FOMO. The best redemptions come from searching award space FIRST, then transferring only once you've confirmed the seat exists.
