Why most beginners quit fencing in the first month (and how to not be one of them)
Started En Garde Academy after watching dozens of beginners quit fencing in their first few weeks — almost always for the same three reasons:
They try to learn attacks before they can move. Footwork is 80% of fencing at the beginner level. If your advance-lunge isn't automatic, your blade work doesn't matter yet.
They skip distance control. Beginners obsess over parries and feints when the actual skill that wins bouts is knowing exactly how far you are from your opponent's blade.
They train alone with no feedback loop. Fencing is a conversation with an opponent — you can't learn it by shadow-drilling in your garage indefinitely.
Built Fencing Fundamentals around fixing those three things in order: footwork first, distance second, blade work third — with a community to actually get reps against. If you've bounced off fencing before, it's probably not because you're bad at it. It's probably the order you learned things in.
