5 things I wish I knew before taking the EPD exam in Vienna
If you're an international student at WU, TU Wien, or Uni Wien, you probably already know: the EPD (Ergänzungsprüfung Deutsch) is standing between you and your degree.
Here's what most people get wrong:
1. The textbook alone won't save you.
The exam tests practical language use, not just grammar rules. You need to practice writing structured texts under time pressure — not just read chapters.
2. The listening section is harder than you think.
Native speakers talk fast. If you're only studying written German, you'll be caught off guard. Start watching ORF news or Austrian podcasts now.
3. Start with past exam formats, not vocabulary lists.
Understand what they're actually testing. The structure hasn't changed much — once you know the pattern, you can prepare strategically.
4. Study with other students who are also taking it.
You'll learn faster explaining concepts to each other than studying alone. Find a group. If you don't have one, I built EPD Academy exactly for this.
5. Give yourself at least 6-8 weeks.
I've seen people cram in 2 weeks and fail. The ones who pass consistently give themselves 6-8 weeks of focused prep.
