The 3 SAT Math topics that separate 650 scorers from 700+ scorers

Most students plateau in the 600-650 range because they master the "easy" topics (linear equations, basic geometry) but never lock in the ones that actually separate scorers. Here's what we see over and over with students who break 700:

1. Systems of equations with word problems (not just algebra)

650 scorers can solve a system when it's handed to them in equation form. 700+ scorers can translate a messy word problem into that system in under 30 seconds. This is a translation skill, not a math skill — and it's trainable with reps, not more formulas.

2. Nonlinear functions and their graphs (quadratics, exponentials)

The SAT loves testing what happens to a graph when you change a coefficient, shift a vertex, or combine two functions. Most students memorize the vertex formula but freeze the moment a question asks "which transformation..." instead of "solve for x." Understanding the shape of a function beats memorizing its formula every time.

3. Data analysis and ratios in context (not calculation, interpretation)

Advanced Math and Problem Solving/Data Analysis questions on the harder end aren't testing whether you can do the arithmetic — they're testing whether you can figure out what the question is even asking. Rate problems, unit conversions, and multi-step ratio questions trip up students who can do the math but haven't practiced reading comprehension for math problems specifically.

The pattern: 700+ isn't about knowing more formulas. It's about being fast and correct on the questions that require translating language into math and interpreting results — not just calculating.
