5 Excel skills that actually get you hired in data/finance (not VLOOKUP)
Everyone tells you to "learn Excel" for a data or finance career. Then they teach you VLOOKUP and conditional formatting. That's like learning to drive by adjusting the mirrors.
Here are the 5 skills that actually matter in interviews and on the job:
1. INDEX/MATCH (and now XLOOKUP) — VLOOKUP breaks the moment your data moves. INDEX/MATCH is what analysts actually use. If you're still writing VLOOKUP, you're telling hiring managers you learned Excel from YouTube in 2015.
2. Pivot Tables with calculated fields — Anyone can drag and drop a pivot table. The real skill is adding calculated fields, grouping dates dynamically, and building dashboards that update automatically.
3. Power Query — This is the single most underrated Excel feature. If you're manually copying data between sheets, you're doing it wrong. Power Query automates all of that and it's built right into Excel.
4. Dynamic arrays (FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE) — These formulas changed Excel forever. One formula can replace 10 helper columns. Interviewers love seeing candidates who know these because it signals you're current.
5. Data validation + structured tables — Building spreadsheets other people can actually use without breaking them. This is what separates "knows Excel" from "Excel expert" on a resume.
The pattern? These are all about working with real data at scale — not formatting cells to look pretty.
I teach all of this inside Excel Unlocked. If you're switching into data or finance, this is the stuff that actually moves the needle.
