How confident are you in your exotic pet's care?
What's your biggest struggle with exotic pet care?
What exotic pet do you own or want to own?
š Most pet owners don't know this exists. The rarest exotic pets have care secrets that vets won't tell you ā because most vets have never treated one.
š¦ 99% of exotic pet content online is wrong. It's copied from outdated sources. The guides inside are built from real hands-on experience ā not Google.
šæ Your exotic pet's lifespan could double. With the right environment, diet, and handling techniques, many exotic species outlive their expected lifespan by years. Most owners never unlock this.
š This knowledge used to be gatekept. Serious exotic keepers guarded this information for decades. Now it's all in one place ā and most people still don't know it exists.
š¾ Exotic pets don't fail. Their owners do. Not because they don't care ā because they never had access to the right information. Until now.
I've kept exotic pets for years now ā bearded dragons, geckos, a chameleon that has more personality than most people I know. But when I started? I was a mess.
Here are 5 things I learned the hard way so you don't have to:
1. Your regular vet probably can't help.
Most vets specialize in cats and dogs. When my bearded dragon stopped eating, my local vet told me to "just wait." Turns out it was a husbandry issue with his basking temperature. Finding an actual exotic vet (or at least reliable care guidance) is not optional ā it's essential.
2. Humidity is everything and nobody talks about it enough.
Shedding problems, respiratory infections, skin issues ā 80% of the time, humidity is the culprit. Get a digital hygrometer. Not the stick-on ones. A real one. Check it twice a day until you know your enclosure's patterns.
3. The internet will give you 15 different answers to the same question.
One Reddit thread says 75°F is fine. Another says 85°F or your animal will die. A Facebook group says both are wrong. This is the single most frustrating thing about keeping exotic pets ā there's no central, reliable source of truth.
4. Your animal is not a dog. Stop expecting dog behavior.
Reptiles don't show affection the way mammals do. That doesn't mean they're not thriving. Learn to read their signals ā basking habits, appetite, activity levels, coloring ā instead of projecting what you think happiness looks like.
5. You need a community, not just a care sheet.
A care sheet tells you what temperature to set. A community tells you what to do at 11pm when your gecko is acting weird and you can't tell if it's an emergency. The people who keep you sane are the ones who've been through the same panic at 2am.
That last one is exactly why I started Exotic Pet Club ā a membership community for people who own reptiles, parrots, hedgehogs, ferrets, and all the other animals that mainstream pet content ignores.
Every month: expert care guides, printable trackers, Q&A breakdowns, product recommendations, and a private community that actually knows what a bioactive enclosure is.
If you've ever felt alone in caring for your exotic pet, you're not anymore.
