5 Mistakes New Dropshippers Make When Sourcing from China

I've worked with hundreds of Shopify store owners sourcing products from China. Here are the 5 most common mistakes I see — and how to avoid them.

1. Going straight to Alibaba without vetting

Alibaba is a directory, not a quality guarantee. Most listings are from trading companies, not actual factories. You end up paying middleman markups and getting inconsistent quality.

2. Skipping samples

"It looks good in the photos" is not a sourcing strategy. Always order samples before committing to a supplier. A $20 sample can save you thousands in returns and bad reviews.

3. Ignoring packaging

Your unboxing experience IS your brand. Generic poly bags scream "cheap dropshipping." Even a simple branded sticker or thank-you card can 2x your review rate.

4. Not planning for shipping times

Ocean freight takes 15-30 days. Air freight is faster but expensive. The move? Keep 2-3 weeks of inventory in a local warehouse or with your agent. Your customers won't wait 3 weeks.

5. Trying to do it all yourself

Google Translate + WeChat + timezone differences = chaos. A good sourcing agent speaks the language, knows the factories, and handles QC so you can focus on selling.
