The #1 mistake first-time bird owners make (it's not diet or cage size)
Most beginner bird-keeping advice obsesses over cage dimensions and seed vs. pellet debates. Important, sure — but the mistake that actually causes the most surrendered/rehomed birds is different:
Picking a species based on looks instead of temperament and noise level.
A few real examples:
Sun Conures are gorgeous and popular in videos — but their contact calls can hit 100+ decibels, multiple times a day. Apartment owners are frequently blindsided by this within the first month.
Cockatoos bond intensely and can develop severe separation anxiety if left alone for long workdays — leading to feather-plucking and behavioral issues that are heartbreaking to deal with.
Budgies and cockatiels are consistently the best fit for first-time owners: quieter, smaller space requirements, more forgiving of a learning curve, and just as much personality once they warm up.
Before you buy a bird, ask yourself honestly:
How many hours a day is it realistically alone?
Can my walls/neighbors handle daily loud calling?
Am I prepared for a 15-30+ year commitment (yes, really, depending on species)?
Getting this one decision right eliminates most of the regret and rehoming stories you see in bird owner groups. Happy to answer questions if you're trying to figure out what species fits your situation.
