The 3 Candlestick Patterns That Actually Matter (And How to Trade Them)
Most traders memorize 30+ candlestick patterns and can't trade any of them profitably. Here are the only 3 you need — and exactly how to use them.
1. The Engulfing Pattern
What it is: A candle that completely engulfs the previous candle's body. Bullish engulfing at support = potential long. Bearish engulfing at resistance = potential short.
Why it works: It represents a complete shift in momentum within a single session. The opposing side got fully absorbed.
How to trade it:
Wait for it to form at a key level (support/resistance, order block, or a moving average)
Enter on the close of the engulfing candle
Stop loss below/above the engulfing candle's wick
Target the next key level or use 1:2 RR minimum
The mistake most traders make: Trading engulfing patterns in the middle of nowhere. Without confluence from a key level, it's just noise.

2. The Pin Bar (Hammer / Shooting Star)
What it is: A candle with a small body and a long wick (at least 2x the body). The long wick shows rejection of a price level.
Why it works: That long wick is trapped traders. They entered, price reversed hard, and now their stop losses will fuel your move.
How to trade it:
Identify at a key support/resistance zone
The wick should be pointing INTO the level (rejecting it)
Enter on the next candle's open or on a 50% retracement of the pin bar
Stop loss beyond the wick
Pro tip: Pin bars on the H4 and Daily timeframes are significantly more reliable than on lower timeframes. The higher the timeframe, the more capital behind the rejection.

3. The Inside Bar
What it is: A candle whose high and low are completely contained within the previous candle's range. It signals compression — the market is coiling.
Why it works: Inside bars represent consolidation before expansion. When the range breaks, it often breaks hard.
How to trade it:
Best used as a continuation pattern in a trending market
Place a buy stop above the mother candle's high (uptrend) or sell stop below (downtrend)
Stop loss on the opposite side of the inside bar
Let the breakout momentum carry you to the next structure level
Key insight: Multiple inside bars in sequence = even more compression = even more explosive breakout. Two or three inside bars stacking is a high-probability setup.

The Real Edge
Patterns alone don't make you profitable. Context does.
Every single one of these patterns needs:
A key level (support, resistance, supply/demand zone)
The right market structure (trending vs. ranging)
Proper risk management (1-2% per trade, always)
If you can master these 3 patterns with proper confluence, you don't need anything else.
Study the charts. Put in the screen time. The patterns will start jumping off the page.
