5 Mistakes That Kill Most Detailing Businesses Before They Even Start

I've seen hundreds of people try to start detailing businesses. Most of them fail within 6 months — not because they're bad at detailing, but because they make the same business mistakes over and over.

1. Pricing too low to "get clients"

You're not Walmart. Charging $50 for a full detail doesn't make you competitive — it makes you broke. The math doesn't work when you factor in supplies, drive time, and your actual hours. Price for profit from day one.

2. No systems = no scale

If everything lives in your head — scheduling, follow-ups, pricing — you'll burn out by month 3. Build simple systems early: a booking process, a follow-up template, a pricing sheet. It doesn't need to be fancy, it needs to exist.

3. Spending money on gear instead of marketing

That $3,000 polisher won't help if nobody knows you exist. Your first $500 should go to business cards, a Google Business profile, and running a few targeted local ads. The gear can come after the revenue does.

4. Skipping the ugly work

Everyone wants to do paint correction on Porsches. Nobody wants to clean out a minivan full of Cheerios. But those minivan moms? They're the ones who rebook every month and tell 10 friends. Do the ugly work first — the dream clients come later.

5. Going solo too long

There's a ceiling to what one person can earn per day. If you want a business and not just a job, start thinking about hiring help way earlier than you think you should.

I built Finer Details Club to help people avoid all of this. If you're serious about turning detailing into a real business, this is where it happens.
