The No-BS Beginner Nutrition Guide šŸŽ

Forget meal plans with 47 ingredients you can't pronounce. Here's what actually matters when you're starting out.

The Only 3 Rules You Need

1. Protein at every meal

Aim for 0.7–1g of protein per pound of bodyweight daily. That's the single biggest lever for building muscle and recovering from workouts.

Easy sources:

  • Chicken breast, ground turkey, salmon

  • Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs

  • Protein powder (whey or plant-based)

  • Tofu, tempeh, lentils

If you weigh 160 lbs, shoot for 110–160g of protein per day. Split it across 3-4 meals so you're not forcing down 80g at dinner.

2. Eat enough — don't starve yourself

The #1 beginner mistake is eating too little. If you're training hard and eating 1,200 calories, you're going to feel terrible, lose muscle, and quit.

Quick estimate for your daily calories:

  • Maintain weight: Bodyweight Ɨ 14-16

  • Lose fat slowly: Bodyweight Ɨ 11-13

  • Build muscle: Bodyweight Ɨ 16-18

A 160 lb person maintaining = roughly 2,240–2,560 calories/day. That's way more food than most beginners expect.

3. Hydrate like it's your job

Half your bodyweight in ounces of water, minimum. 160 lbs = 80 oz = about 2.5 liters per day. More if you're sweating a lot.

Signs you're dehydrated: headaches, low energy, bad workouts, dark urine. Fix this first before blaming your program.

What About [Insert Trendy Diet]?

  • Keto — unnecessary for beginners. Just eat balanced meals.

  • Intermittent fasting — fine if you like it, but it's not magic. Calories and protein still matter.

  • Cutting carbs — carbs fuel your workouts. Eat them. Rice, potatoes, oats, fruit are all great.

The 80/20 Rule

Eat whole, minimally processed foods 80% of the time. The other 20%? Live your life. Pizza with friends isn't going to ruin your progress. Consistency over perfection, always.

Your Action Step

For the next 7 days, just track your protein. Don't change anything else yet. Use MyFitnessPal or just estimate. Get within range of your protein target and I promise you'll feel a difference in your energy and recovery.

The 3 mistakes every beginner makes in their first month at the gym

I've coached hundreds of beginners and the same patterns show up every time. If you're just getting started, avoid these and you'll be months ahead of everyone else.

1. Doing too much, too fast

Your first week should feel almost too easy. Seriously. The goal isn't to destroy yourself — it's to build a habit. 3 days a week, 30-40 minutes, full body. That's it. The people who go 6 days a week in January are gone by March.

2. Copying advanced programs from the internet

That PPL split your favorite influencer does? It's designed for someone who's been training for years. As a beginner, you don't need a chest day. You need compound movements — squats, deadlifts, presses, rows — done consistently with good form.

3. Ignoring recovery

Sleep 7-8 hours. Eat enough protein (0.7-1g per lb of bodyweight). Drink water. Stretch. This isn't the glamorous part, but it's where the results actually happen.

The gym is simple. Consistency beats intensity every single time. If you want a structured program that takes the guesswork out, that's exactly what I built FitCoach for.
