The 3-Minute Pre-Game Routine That Triggers Flow State

Most athletes warm up their body but completely neglect their brain. Here's a dead-simple routine I use with competitive team sport athletes that primes you for flow before you step on the court or field.

Minute 1: Sensory Reset

Close your eyes. Take 3 deep breaths (4 seconds in, 6 seconds out). On each exhale, consciously release tension from your jaw, shoulders, and hands. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and lowers the cortisol that blocks flow.

Minute 2: Intention Lock

Pick ONE thing you want to execute in the first 5 minutes of play. Not a result — a process. "I'm going to move my feet on every defensive possession." "I'm going to make my first touch forward." Specificity narrows your attention, and narrow attention is the gateway to flow.

Minute 3: Visualization Sprint

Eyes still closed. Replay 3 moments where you were in the zone — moving without thinking, everything clicking. Feel the speed, the ease, the confidence. Your brain doesn't distinguish between vivid imagination and reality. You're literally pre-loading the neural pathways you need.

That's it. 3 minutes. No crystals, no mantras, no woo. Just neuroscience applied to sport.

I break down the full system inside Free Flow — the program I built for competitive team sport athletes who want to access, maintain, and recover flow on demand.

Welcome to Free Flow 🧠

Welcome to the team. You just made a decision most athletes never make — investing in your mental game.

Here's how to get the most out of Free Flow:

1. Start with the Flow State Program — structured lessons that walk you through the science and practice of flow. Do one lesson per week minimum.

2. Join the Athletes Lounge — this is your community. Ask questions, share wins, talk through blocks. The athletes who engage here progress fastest.

3. Check Flow Insights regularly — I'll be posting breakdowns, techniques, and real-world examples from the pros.

The goal is simple: make flow your default state, not something you hope for on game day.

Let's get to work.
