Why most options flow alerts are useless (and what to check before paying for one)

Most "unusual options activity" alerts get sent to everyone at the same time, which means by the time you act, the edge is gone. If you're evaluating an alerts service — ours or anyone else's — here's what actually separates a real edge from noise:

  1. Size relative to open interest, not just premium. A $2M trade on a thinly-traded contract matters more than a $5M trade in a name where that's a rounding error.

  2. Aggressor side. Was it bought at the ask (bullish conviction) or sold into the bid? Raw volume alone tells you nothing.

  3. Repeat flow, not one-offs. Single prints are noise. The same strike getting hit multiple times across the day is signal.

  4. Speed of delivery. If the alert lands more than a minute or two after the print, the move has usually already started pricing in.

We built Flowdesk around these four filters specifically because most free Discord alert bots just fire on premium size and call it a day. Happy to answer questions on how flow analysis actually works, whether or not you ever join us.
