Your thumbnail is why nobody clicks your video

I've been designing thumbnails for creators for a while now, and the #1 mistake I see is this: too much going on.

The best-performing thumbnails follow 3 rules:

1. One focal point. Your viewer's eye should land on ONE thing — a face, an object, a number. If there are 5 competing elements, nothing stands out.

2. Contrast is king. Light text on dark background, or vice versa. If your title blends into the image, it might as well not be there. YouTube compresses thumbnails to ~120px on mobile — if it's not readable at that size, scrap it.

3. Emotion sells. Faces with exaggerated expressions outperform everything else. Not cringe-level exaggerated — but enough to make someone feel something in 0.3 seconds.

The creators who consistently get 100K+ views aren't just making better content — they're making better first impressions.

I design thumbnails, banners, and graphics for content creators at FORME. If your click-through rate needs work, that's what I do.
