The $150/hr freelance designer playbook (that nobody talks about)

Most freelance UI/UX designers are stuck at $30-50/hr because they're competing on deliverables instead of outcomes.

Here's the shift that changed everything for me:

Stop selling screens. Start selling decisions.

Your client doesn't care about a pixel-perfect mockup. They care that their signup flow converts 3x better, that their dashboard reduces support tickets by 40%, that their app feels so intuitive users never need onboarding.

When you frame your work around business outcomes, you're no longer a "designer" — you're a revenue partner. And revenue partners don't charge hourly.

3 things I changed:

  1. Discovery calls over briefs. I stopped accepting project briefs and started running 30-min discovery calls. I ask: "What does success look like 6 months after this launches?" That one question reframes the entire engagement.

  1. Case studies with numbers. Every portfolio piece now leads with the result — "Redesigned checkout flow → 2.4x conversion lift" — not the pretty screenshots. Clients with budget care about ROI.

  1. Retainers over projects. Instead of one-off redesigns, I pitch ongoing design partnerships. Monthly retainers = predictable income + deeper client relationships.

The freelance designers who charge premium rates aren't necessarily better at Figma. They're better at positioning.

If you're a designer trying to break past the hourly ceiling, I'm building something at FormFlow for exactly this. We go deep on the business side of design — the stuff design Twitter doesn't teach you.
